Act Out a Favorite Book
The theme of January has been Books, so to finish up the month, I thought I'd share both a great book and a fun movement activity I recently shared with my kids. My daughter's favorite book is Nobody Likes a Goblin, by Ben Hatke. This book has it all: great artwork, a good story (that isn't too long), a great message, and it's not only entertaining for kids but for parents as well.
Without revealing the entire book, I'll just say it's a great book about friendship, prejudice and not making assumptions based on a particular group's stereotype, a message even the most open-minded of us could surely benefit from again and again.
Our recent twist was to act out the story of Nobody Likes a Goblin. My daughter played the role of the goblin, my son was the farmer and the innkeeper (they have the fewest lines) and I was "Skeleton," the goblin's best friend. We used props from around the house: Mardi Gras-style beads for the treasure, a pop-up tent for the cave, a "Frozen" tiara for the crown and an old boot for, well, an old boot.
Do your children or students have a favorite book? Bring a little drama into your life (the good kind) and act it out. It will be a comedy of errors, but that's still comedy :)
